Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?

If you ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini for "the best" in your category and a competitor comes up instead of you, it usually isn't about which business is better. AI assistants build their answers from pages they can find and trust: review sites, "best of" lists, directories, forum threads and the businesses' own websites.

Here's a simple way to work out why a competitor wins:

• Ask the AI the exact question a buyer would ask, then ask it "which sources did you use?" Perplexity shows its sources by default.
• Open those sources. Note every list, directory or thread where the competitor appears and you don't.
• Check your own site. Does one page clearly say what you do, who it's for and where you work, in plain words?

Then fix the gaps one at a time. Get listed where your buyers already look, ask happy customers for reviews on the sites the AI cited, and add a clear "what we do" page.
