Is your website blocking ChatGPT and Perplexity?
Some websites block AI bots without the owner knowing, often through a plugin or a security setting.
OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI docs). Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot so your site can appear in its search results (Perplexity docs).
The 2-minute check:
- Open yoursite.com/robots.txt in a browser.
- Look for a "User-agent: OAI-SearchBot" or "User-agent: PerplexityBot" line followed by "Disallow: /". Also check for "User-agent: *" followed by "Disallow: /", which blocks every bot.
- If you find either, ask your web person to remove it, or check your firewall or security plugin settings.
One thing not to mix up: GPTBot is a different OpenAI bot, used for AI training. OpenAI treats each setting separately, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search (OpenAI docs).
